NMU invites applications for the position of Head Football Coach, a 12-month, full-time position responsible for providing leadership, vision, and direction for all aspects of the program. The Head Football Coach reports directly to the Athletic Director and will supervise assistant coaches, student employees, volunteer coaches, and functional oversight of the equipment supervisor. Variable shift/variable days depending upon playing schedule, recruiting demands and department events.
Northern Michigan University (NMU) seeks an experienced, visionary, and highly motivated Football Head Coach to lead a comprehensive Division II football program that plays a critical role in elevating institutional pride, enhancing the student-athlete experience, and advancing the university’s competitive success. Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Coach is responsible for the overall management, strategic direction, and daily operation of the football program, including recruitment, player development, competitive performance, academic support, staffing, compliance, and program culture. The Head Coach will oversee a staff of assistant coaches, graduate assistants, and support personnel, ensuring alignment with NMU’s mission, departmental priorities, and NCAA/GLIAC regulations. This position represents a pivotal leadership opportunity for a collaborative, student-focused coach who is committed to competitive excellence, character development, and fostering a high-performing environment that supports both athletic achievement and student-athlete well-being while contributing to NMU’s broader strategic goals. Duties/Responsibilities: • Responsible for adhering to all policies and procedures of the Department of Athletics in the development and maintenance of the football program. • Direct the activities of all personnel and students within the program. • Evaluate Student-athlete performance during training, practices, and competitions. • Operate within the program budget established by the Director of Athletics. • Coordinate team travel arrangements and supply an appropriate itinerary 48 hours before departure. • Recruit academically and athletically qualified Student-athletes. • Counsel, guide, advise, and assist Student-athletes in their academic, social, and physical development. • Provide consultation with the Equipment Supervisor with respect to order, allotment, and inventory of equipment utilized in the football program. • Develop, plan, and submit to the Director of Athletics a final schedule for the football program in a timely manner. • Work cooperatively with the Sports Information Director on public relations activities and other sports information related matters. • Coordinate and/or conduct revenue generation to achieve the target percentage of total program operating budget as assigned by the Director of Athletics. • Abide by all NCAA, NMU, Conference, and Department of Athletics rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. • Perform community service and community engagement activities throughout the year on campus and in the Marquette, MI community. • Effectively interact with students and their families, NMU faculty and staff, other coaches and players, and the general public. • Work in a safe manner, observing safety, health and sanitation codes, regulations or practices required by the University and government authorities. Work in a positive, productive manner with a wide variety of NMU's students, peers and other employees, and external constituents. Regular and consistent attendance is required to effectively fulfill the duties of this position. • Perform physical tasks relating to the successful completion of practices, competition, and additional responsibilities. • Other duties as required, including performance of duties of a lower classification as needed.
Required education: Bachelor’s Degree Required specialized training/certifications: NCAA learning portal proficiency, or passing within one month of hire; possess a current CPR certification or ability to obtain upon hire. Required minimum work experience: Demonstrated successful football coaching experience as a head coach or an assistant coach at the professional level; NCAA Division I, II, or III level, or as a head coach at the NAIA, junior college of high school level; no prior involvement with NCAA major rules violations; and on- and off-campus recruitment of student athletes.
