The Director of Broadcasting & Media Relations is a full-time, 12-month position reporting to the Associate VP of Athletics. The Director plays a key role in overseeing all aspects of athletic communications for Tornados Athletics. This position is responsible for coordinating sports information coverage for all athletic events and creates and distributes content that promotes student-athletes, coaches, and staff, enhancing their recognition on regional and national levels. Additionally, this role manages student workers, assists with digital content creation, and participates in campus events and committees to increase the visibility and engagement of Tornados Athletics. The position requires the ability to handle an irregular work schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: •Prepares & manages departmental operational budget. •Prepare regular news releases and feature stories for distribution to local media, hometown papers, intercollegiate opponents, boosters and other interested publics. •Manage all aspects of the department’s electronic media projects, including livestream broadcasts of all home sporting events, and the weekly “Tornado Talk” radio show. Assist in securing sponsors and selling advertising. •Oversee maintenance of the athletics website ensuring that all content is accurate, current and consistent with approved style guidelines. •Supervise all Sports Information support staff for home athletics contests. Secure necessary arrangements for media, scouts, statisticians, and other press box personnel for home athletic events. Mentor interns and student assistants assigned sports information responsibilities. •Participate in planning and preparation for special events such as Hall of Fame Day, Homecoming, and the Athletics Awards Ceremony. •Assist with game stats, live stats, and webcasting for assigned sports. •Release relevant athletic information to local and national news outlets. •Handle media requests, interviews, news conferences, and media days. •Gather and submit required statistical data and information to the USA South and NCAA. •Coordinate nominations for honors and awards for student-athletes and coaches. •Maintain historical records, statistics, and photographs, and other important department information. •Manage the recruitment, training, and scheduling of student workers to assist with sports information duties. •Identify and write engaging feature stories to highlight and promote student-athletes, coaches, staff, and Tornados Athletics on both regional and national levels. •Write content for marketing and communication materials, including media guides, video scripts, and more. •Attend and/or assist with select events throughout the year. •Serve on campus committees as requested. •Perform other duties as assigned.
A Bachelor’s degree in sports management, communications, or similar field required; Master’s degree preferred. Desired qualifications include a minimum three years experience in sports information or related field.
Qualified candidate must have exceptional problem-solving skills, ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and ability to resolve issues under intense time constraints. Demonstrated excellence in sports journalism, oral and written communication skills and working knowledge of sport statistics software (Genius and Presto) are also required. Experience in print lay-out, desktop publishing, web page design, social media graphic design, and sport broadcasting is highly desired. This position also requires occasional public speaking and on-air broadcasting.
