Plan, develop and directs strategy for recruiting, counseling and coaching student-athletes in the sport of men’s basketball. Directs the conditioning of student athletes to achieve maximum athletic performance, assesses players' skills and assigns team positions, evaluates own and opposition team capabilities to determine game strategy, and coaches or directs coaches to instruct players in techniques of game.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

• Overall administration and organization of the men’s basketball program. General organization of all practices.
• Administrative duties such as budgets, purchase orders, trip requests and travel coordination.
• Recruitment of in-state and out-of-state athletes. Advising, retention and counseling of current student athletes.
• Promote college in positive light. Promote student academic and athletic success.
• Monitor and report student athlete attendance and grades to ensure compliance with eligibility policy and student success to graduation.
• Responsible for community relations including planning and implementing projects such as fund raising.
• Other duties as assigned.

Performance Measurements:

1. To understand policies and procedures, rules, code of conduct and eligibility requirements of national and state athletic associations. (NJCAA/KJCCC)
2. To adhere to community life, national athletic association and state standards.
3. To demonstrate leadership on our campus through the recruitment and development of athletic teams.
4. To manage within budgetary guidelines.
5. To adhere to a strong sense of public perception/GCCC and the City of Garden City.
6. Be available to travel with teams.
7. Live in close proximity of GCCC.

Knowledge and Skills:

Experience Two years to five years of similar or related experience.

Education A Bachelor's Degree.

Interpersonal Skills Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential elements of the job. Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the college for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation.

Other Skills BS Degree in physical education, recreation, health or related field or equivalent plus 4-5 years’ experience with college level program or as a high school head coach. Experience in an academic discipline or higher education, and two years recruiting background desired. Must have knowledge of national rules and regulations. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are necessary. Ability to maintain confidential information in professional manner required. Ability to recruit off campus and to lead and supervise players and coaches. The ability to get along with a wide variety of people in various situations. Computer proficiency necessary (Microsoft Office preferred).

Physical Requirements Individual should possess the physical dexterity to demonstrate basketball specific drills and be able to lift at least 50 lbs. daily. Individual will be required to travel for recruiting and conferences and must be able to sit for extended periods of time.

Work Environment  Work will be conducted in an office setting and in various indoor athletic facilities.

About Garden City Community College

The first four community colleges in Kansas were established in 1919, and GCCC is one of two from that group which still exist. It was created by county-wide election on April 1, 1919, and opened in September of the same year. The present 14-building, 63-acre campus at 801 Campus Drive was designed between July, 1965 and January, 1966. The Collins Technical Building was added in 1974, and a residential life addition was built in 1978. The Penka Building was added in 1986, when additions were completed to the Joyce, Collins and PE Buildings. Williams Stadium, a baseball facility, was also added. In January of 1996 a 15,000 sq. ft. $1.4 million technical teaching laboratory was completed so that GCCC could provide more training for workers in area and national industries. A three-building student apartment complex opened in 2002, and a 12,900 square-foot, two-level addition to the original student center was completed in 2003, with the entire structure renamed the Beth Tedrow Student Center. The 19,260 square-foot, three-level, two-story Student and Community Services Center opened in August, 2006 and was dedicated in October of the same year. Attached to the original... Administration Building, the $3.12 million facility consolidated public and student services, provided an on-campus home for adult basic education, added a series of 21st Century classrooms and created a single point of assistance for most services GCCC provides. GCCC owns more than 70 acres east of Campus Drive, which has been developed in a cooperative effort with the City of Garden City. Named Tangeman Fields in honor of Dr. James Tangeman, a former president, the property includes softball and baseball facilities. Also located there are the college's indoor baseball practice building, a football practice area, running track with public seating and soccer fields.
