Christchurch School is a co-ed Episcopal boarding and day school serving grades 9—12. Founded in 1921, Christchurch is located on a 125-acre waterfront campus on the Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia’s tidewater region. The school’s Mission is to inspire and guide each student's pursuit of personal excellence in academics and character so they are prepared for meaningful lives as engaged citizens and community leaders.
Position Overview. Christchurch School is looking to find energetic and experienced soccer coaches who also want to be a part of a broader educational setting. We know that many people come to education through coaching and have several openings in various academic disciplines for the right candidate. Our girl’s and boy’s soccer program have experienced tremendous success in recent years in Division 2 in the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. We are looking to add to that program with additional experienced soccer coaches. If you enjoy being a part of a community, coaching high school students, want to contribute to a competitive girl’s and/or boy’s soccer program, want to foster athletics as a way to develop life skills this could be a great fit for you. If you have teaching experience that is an added benefit but is not a pre-requisite for the position. A passion to learn and to work with high school age students in a boarding school setting is.
A typical load is teaching 4 sections of a course, coaching 2 seasons of soccer (men’s soccer in the fall, futsal in the winter, or women’s soccer in the spring), and contributing to the boarding school life by doing duty one night a week and weekend duty approximately 6 weekends a year. Currently we have openings in our math department, science department, Learning Skills Program, and computer science department. If you have a background in those academic areas and want to add coaching experience with teaching experience, please consider applying. This could be a particularly exciting opportunity for someone just out of college considering education as a career.
Being a part of a boarding school comes with other benefits beyond the coaching and community. Our school is located on the beautiful Rappahannock River along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. Our location provides recreational opportunities on the water and is within an hour drive of major cities and airports.
Studies have shown that women, people of color, and those just beginning in education are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every one of the qualifications as described in a job description. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background or who is excited about gaining the experience described in the listing. We believe deeply in a boarding school model of education and are interested in people who find the idea of teaching young people in all capacities of their lives compelling. We would encourage you to apply, even if you don’t believe you meet every one of our qualifications as described.

Christchurch is an Episcopal co-ed boarding and day school that serves and guides each student in achieving personal excellence in academics and character, preparing them for meaningful lives as engaged citizens and community leaders. Located one hour east of Richmond; near Hampton Roads, Williamsburg, and Fredericksburg; south of Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, the school is nestled on the mouth of the Rappahannock River just a few miles before the Chesapeake Bay. A vacation spot for many, known affectionately to locals as the "rivah life", the area has a strong local community that embraces rural life with also enjoying easy access to more populated areas such as DC, Richmond, and Va Beach. In short, a beautiful part of Virginia and USA, that is a bit "under the radar".
Matthew Schaefer has been the program leader for Christchurch School boys (fall season) and girls (spring season) soccer programs since 2003. He currently serves as the head varsity coach of both programs and he oversees all aspects of both programs - recruiting, marketing, JV teams, equipment, film, etc. He is also the calculus/upper level math teacher, and works with residential life as a dorm pare...nt. Since his arrival, the Christchurch boys soccer program has been a consistent VISAA state playoff team, advancing to state playoffs in 19 of his 21 seasons, and with state titles in 2009, 2022 and 2024. Coach Schaefer helped start the girls program in 2007, and under his direction the team has grown to a consistent VISAA D2 state playoff team, and in the last three years the girls team advanced to the state finals, losing in PKs in both 2022 and 2023, and 0-1 in 2024. Before he came to Christchurch, he was employed by the USDA, on a USDA-sponsored fellowship at Penn State University for the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department, working on a project in food engineering. During that time, 2000-2003, he led the PSU Men’s Club Soccer to a three year record of 66-12-8 (W-D-L), a 54 game unbeaten streak, and the 2000 National Collegiate Club Soccer Champions. While at PSU he also worked with and assisted as needed the PSU women’s varsity soccer team, and he was head coach of a U-14 girls classic travel soccer team. Prior to PSU, 1997-1999, he worked as a teaching and research assistant while earning his masters at Virginia Tech, during that time he helped establish the Virginia Tech United Men’s Club team, served as player coach of the VT men’s club team, and coached youth travel club teams for New River Soccer Club. Schaefer earned his undergraduate degree in Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering from PSU in 1997, during that time he was a consistent walk on try out for the men's varsity soccer team, but served only as a practice player. During his senior year at PSU, coach Schaefer was one of the key members of the initial PSU club team, established in fall 1996. He is a member of the Radnor High School soccer hall of fall, and as a youth was an EPYSA state player. Coach Schaefer has found that boarding school offers a unique opportunity to create community based soccer that is under the umbrella of our larger mission as a school - find the infinite value in each child - everyone can contribute, we strive to ignite the gifts each child has to offer, thus helping the child express these gifts to benefit the community.
