Southwestern University, located in Georgetown has an immediate opening for a Director of Development for Intercollegiate Athletics. As a Development team member, this position focuses on donor and gift acquisition and donor and revenue retention for Athletics. This position is primarily responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding relationships with major gift donors. The position is also responsible for growing the Pirate Club membership and expanding the Corporate Partners Program membership. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development, this position works closely with the Director of Annual Giving, other Major Gift Officers, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, coaches, and other University community members to carry out these responsibilities. This is a full-time, fully benefited, exempt position who reports to the Associate Vice President for Development.
Primary Duties: •Works closely with the Associate Vice President for Development, the Director of Annual Giving, other Major Gift Officers, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, coaches, and other University community members to develop an overall Development strategy to support Pirate Athletics. •Collaborates with the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics to involve coaches in identifying prospects and determining needs within their respective programs and partner with them to cultivate and solicit donors to support those funding priorities. •Partner with and advise the Associate Vice President for Development on principal giving prospects, preparing briefing documents for the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the President in preparation for major gift solicitations. •Works collaboratively with the Annual Giving team to develop annual plans to solicit gifts from alumni, parents, and friends to support Pirate Athletics. •Promotes membership in the Pirates Club among alumni, parents, and friends of Pirate Athletics to grow annual support and assist with retaining annual donors. •Promotes and expands membership in the Corporate Partners Program among businesses. •Develops and manages a portfolio of 130+ major gift prospects/donors focusing on cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts to the University, primarily for Pirate Athletics. •Partners with the Prospect Development team to continually prioritize a portfolio of potential donors for cultivation and solicitation, tracking their progress through the fundraising cycle. •Conducts regular donor meetings throughout the year, traveling when necessary. •Regularly attend campus athletic events as appropriate to foster enthusiasm and philanthropic support for Pirate Athletics. •Grows the pipeline of donors for Pirate Athletics by regularly reaching out to potential donors to discern their interest in the University and qualify their capacity and inclination to make major and planned gifts. •Works with the Associate Vice President for Development, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the Director of Stewardship to create and implement personalized donor recognition and stewardship plans. •Document all meaningful donor interactions in a timely manner in the University’s donor CRM. •Meet or exceed annual goals for gifts and pledges and build a pipeline of donors and prospects for future membership in the President’s Council. •Meet or exceed annual goals for substantive face-to-face meetings, virtual and/or telephone meetings with current or potential President’s Council members. •Support the successful completion of Southwestern’s comprehensive campaign. •Participate in regular University Relations staff meetings (Annual Giving, Development, and University Relations) and University special events. •Work with all University Relations staff to ensure consistent messaging to constituents. •Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree.
Five or more years (3 or more years for the Associate or Director level) of proven track record securing annual leadership philanthropic gifts ($5,000+) or equivalent experience.
Experience with Intercollegiate Athletics as a student-athlete, coach, or administrator.
Strong leadership and time management skills with the ability to effectively and simultaneously manage many diverse relationships.
The ability to control and move forward on several priorities simultaneously, without losing focus on the objectives of the University. This includes switching priorities as required, without losing momentum.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Strategic thinking coupled with a solid understanding of what constitutes well-written development documents essential.
Ability to function as a catalyst, guide, and doer, and not as a power broker. This individual must engage donors and prospective donors utilizing a collaborative and facilitative approach.
Must possess a high level of self-confidence, professionalism, and the ability to perform under pressure.
Integrity and the ability to build trust through one's own commitment to high personal and professional standards.
Evening and weekend work during special events on and off campus required.
