The UC San Diego Athletic Performance Department is accepting applications for UNPAID Athletic Performance Apprentices. We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a strong desire to work in a fast paced, educational, and high-performance training environment. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to work with athletes from 23 teams and the possibility to focus on a preferred sport such as Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Water Polo, & Volleyball. Individuals selected will be members of the Performance Staff. The apprenticeship will provide an intensive look into our holistic athletic development system. Qualified candidates will obtain experience working alongside senior level practitioners in Sports Science, Nutrition, Mental Performance, Sports Medicine, Rehab Science, and Sports Performance. Candidates will also gain experience working with a variety of technology including: VALD ForceDecks, ForceFrames, NordBord, Catapult, VBT, SmartSpeed Plus and Smartabase. Candidates will get first-hand experience facilitating our holistic athletic development approach including in house educational presentations from Senior Performance staff and our Athletic Performance Unit Discipline leads to round out an experience that will enhance your understanding of how to develop an athlete. *Possibility of a paid part-time position for qualified applicants. Not guaranteed with apprenticeship.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Candidate responsibilities include supporting the functions of full-time performance coaches (preparation for games/training sessions, coaching athletes, cleaning/breakdown, data collection, etc.). The selected candidates will also be required to complete the self-paced intern curriculum; which includes an experience checklist, staff development meetings, online tutorials, and a capstone presentation. Particularly for applicants seeking experience with specific sports, the candidate is expected to be available as scheduled by the Performance Coordinator to accomplish the learning objectives of the apprenticeship. This may include early morning, afternoon and early evening training times.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess or obtain either the NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), or the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association SCCC, certification within 30 days of hire
First Aid and CPR certifications
Have a bachelor’s degree or completing requirements to attain degree
Strong work ethic, punctuality, enthusiasm, respect, and desire to perform at a high level
Due to the nature of the duties as they relate to working with scholar-athletes, a background check is required prior to the start of the internship.
