South Carolina Surf Soccer Club (SC Surf) seeks a Director of Coaching and Player Development to serve as the visible leader of the soccer club. The Director of Coaching and Player development is responsible for overseeing day-to-day soccer operations and the accountability of the coaching staff. The Director of Coaching will collaborate and work closely with the Boys, Girls and Junior Academy Directors to lead and direct coaching staff in all soccer programs. This position will have a significant role in driving and developing the long-term success of the club while also ensuring a strong club culture is maintained.
Position Offer: Director of Coaching and Player Development, Full-time role
Location: Charleston, SC (and surrounding areas)
Responsibilities:
1) Establish, implement, and safeguard a Club DNA with focus on player development and growth
Create the club philosophy, methodologies, system of play and style of play within that system
Establish and foster a professional, collaborative and positive staff culture
Create a staff pay scale and club budget collaboratively with Board of Directors and Business Manager
Be present at weekly training sessions and weekend games to interact with and support coaches, players and parents. Expectation: at least 4 nights per week for training sessions and weekend games based on an established schedule
Create, implement and present data from annual coaching evaluations. Evaluations to be individual and specific based on U8 through U19 coaching goals and developmental benchmarks
2) Develop a Club Procedure Manual that outlines the standards and guidelines for the following:
a) Player Tryouts
b) Player evaluations
c) Coaching evaluations
d) Passporting program
e) Tournaments
f) Club events
g) Camps
3) Ensure the Club Manual will be published and universally used by coaching staff
4) Establish and implement age level-specific club curriculum and training standards, as well as evaluating tools to measure success
5) Provide ongoing and collaborative support to Boys, Girls and Junior Academy directors and coaches as they evaluate player and team performance
6) Collaborate with the directors on all matters concerning recruitment, development, and retention of coaching staff
7) Establish a process that educates parents on the club’s:
a) Vision, core values, and philosophy
b) Expectations of parents and players
c) Procedures for matters concerning their players
d) Pathways to developmental success
Preferred skills for success: Proactive, strong written and verbal communication skills, high level of integrity and reliability, comfortable with public speaking, excellent listening and organizational skills.
How success is measured:
A culture of professionalism, organization, involvement, transparency and consistency based on the following factors (minimum):
1) Pre-Season Staff Orientation Meetings: All leadership and staff will meet to review the club’s procedure manual
2) Mid-Season and Post-Season Staff Reflection Meeting: All leadership and staff will meet to review the season, reflect on success, challenges and make adjustments and goals based on that review
3) Four Professional Development events per year: Staff-wide events meant to supplement coaches’ education and experience. Details and content to be determined by club leadership. Portfolio of professional development opportunities provided to the coaches will be created for future use
4) Coaches Evaluation of Leadership
a) 90% Participation
b) 70% positive feedback on benchmark questions
5) Parent Evaluation of Club
a) 70% Participation
b) 60% positive feedback on benchmark questions
6) On time completion of player evaluations by coaching staff
7) Establish a benchmark on player and coach retention goals for the future
Stipulations: Must disclose all outside affiliations and/or conflicts of interest that may exist with the SC Surf
The Director of Coaching reports to the Board of Directors. This role would require attendance at Board meetings which typically meet monthly and alternates between in-person and Zoom conference call meetings.
Preferred qualifications:
1) Minimum USSF B license or equivalent. USSF or US Club DOC license. National Youth License
2) Experience managing coaches for at least 5 years or longer
3) Experience delivering classroom instruction and field demonstrations aligned with a clear philosophy and methodology
4) Experience communicating through team/group-based technology
SC Surf is an independent 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization that provides recreational and travel soccer programs to the
Charleston, SC community from U5 and U19. Our Boy select teams U13-U19 play in ECNL and our Girls select teams play in the Girls Academy League. Currently, the club is comprised of 887 players representing 63 teams.
