The Assistant Director of Strategic Communications & Content Development will be responsible for serving as the key media contact for his/her assigned sports as well as being responsible for development and writing feature stories and human-interest pieces for umterps.com and One Maryland Magazine, as well as game recaps for various sports including.
Responsibilities include, but not limited to: This position will serve as an editor and work with student and freelance writers on a content writing schedule. This team player will develop, ideate and create content for our website and social media accounts, compile stats, and edit content with a specific focus on accuracy and timeliness, prepare game notes and press releases to ensure effective coverage and proper NCAA and Conference reporting; maintain and update athletic department web site; respond to and manage media requests, coordinate interviews, news conferences and photo sessions, provide event coverage and game-day management functions and work closely with the Strategic Communications Officer and Director of Communications to effectively promote both programs nationally and have a strong working knowledge of the Genius Sports and StatCrew software.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or related field.
Experience: 2-3 years of experience within a collegiate athletic environment or professional team is required. Must have professional experience in public relations, media relations, sports writing and copy editing, proofreading or demonstrated experience in a university sports information office or similar setting.
Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Possess excellent writing skills and be a strong communicator.
Incredibly close attention to detail and proficiency in AP style.
Ability to work under pressure to manage tight deadlines while juggling multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
Outstanding interpersonal skills, along with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
Strong knowledge in MS Office Suite, Google Applications, social media platforms, PhotoShop, InDesign, SIDEARM, in-game statistical software (Genius Sports/StatCrew) and demonstrated writing skills.
Preferences: Demonstrated previous experience in working in a NCAA Division I athletic department or a professional sports organization.
