Job Description Summary The Athletic Trainer will be responsible for providing preventative measures, acute care, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries to intercollegiate student-athletes at Bentley University. Provide athletic training services as directed by the Head Athletic Trainer to the University's 23 NCAA Intercollegiate athletic programs This includes, but is not limited to, managing potentially catastrophic, acute, and chronic athletic injuries within the scope of practice for athletic training, to include rehabilitation and return-to-play decisions. Collaborate with the Head Athletic Trainer, and if necessary, the team physician and/or the strength and conditioning coach. The Athletic Trainer functions as an integral member of the University's athletic health care team.
Essential Duties
Primary responsibilities include the practice of the art of athletic training within the realm of intercollegiate athletics at Bentley University. This includes potential work with the 550+ student-athletes participating on 23 intercollegiate teams.
Concurrent contact with the respective coaches, athletic administrators and other staff serving the 23 teams is expected.
Duties include the evaluation, care and prevention of athletic injuries, on-site care of athletes at practices and competitions, medical documentation, assisting with the Athletic Drug Testing Program, working with Health Services, consulting physicians and other medical clinicians.
Duties may also include carrying out various administrative tasks as assigned possibly being facility maintenance, equipment testing & maintenance, computer database & medical software maintenance, pre-participation documentation collection & clearance, staff scheduling, insurance claims and inventory/ordering of supplies.
Other Duties
This position requires constant independent decision-making regarding the health and welfare of our student-athletes. When faced with emergency situations, these decisions can be life-altering.
Daily decisions and problem solving include the diagnosis of injury and illness and the appropriate therapy, treatment and/or referral of the injury and illness. Further decision-making includes the determination of the ability of the athlete to safely participate in athletics.
Nights and weekends are normal and expected. Holiday work is normal and expected. Team travel is normal and expected.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in Athletic Training or related fields is required.
2 - 3 years of experience as a certified athletic trainer withhigh-impact sports, preferably football.
Massachusetts StateAthletic Training Licensure or in the process of obtaining.
Familiaritywith NCAA rules.
CPR certification.
Must holdand maintaina valid, unrestricted United Statesdriver's license, withan insurable driving history asdeterminedbyBentley's insurancecarrier.
Extensive technical knowledge in the field of Athletic Training Theoretical and practical applications of medical skills.
Knowledge of psychological counseling and ability to triage specific problems and make appropriate referrals.
Specific competencies include care and compassion for the student-athletes. Great communication skills and the ability to work with a Team. Extensive knowledge in the field of Athletic Training.
Work Environment
Nights, weekends, and holidays expected. Some heavy lifting, with outdoor work regardless of weather conditions.
Exposed to loud noise due to the nature of collegiate athletics on a daily basis.
At times, overnight or day travel is required, must be available "on-call" when needed.
Physical Demands
There is a large amount of physical skill required. Some examples are demonstrating an exercise for rehab; setting up a field for a game; carrying water jugs; carrying emergency equipment; helping lift an injured athlete off the field; manual therapy.
