Executive - Associate Athletics Director
The Associate Director of Athletics for Strategic Communications is a dynamic and creative strategist responsible for overseeing the full portfolio of communications for Brown’s Division of Athletics and Recreation. The Associate Director will be responsible for the development and execution of communication strategies that promote thirty-four (34) varsity sport programs and club and recreation programs at Brown University. This position will focus on strategies to build and sustain the brand reputation of Brown Athletics on a local, regional and national level and support its overall mission.
This position will work closely with the Deputy Director of Athletics for Finance & External Relations/CFO and Athletics senior leadership to develop and manage all strategic communications plans, including division positioning, messaging, issues management and crisis communications. An expert writer and communicator, this position must ensure accuracy and consistency across all communications platforms. This position will place a high priority on understanding issues affecting the Division of Athletics & Recreation and University, and will develop strategies based on anticipating multiple potential outcomes.
As an ambassador for the division, the Associate Director of Athletics for Strategic Communications will foster strong relationships both on and off campus with local and national media, community leaders, campus leadership, staff, coaches and external organizations. This position will define and direct all internal and external communications activities including press releases, op-eds, pitch letters, and fact sheets. This position will identify both news and feature stories, working proactively with coaches, student-athletes and the media relations, production, multimedia rights, and marketing teams to highlight them in compelling ways through all available media, and perform other duties as assigned.
The Associate Director of Athletics for Strategic Communications will manage a high-performing team of media relations professionals, with direct supervision of six (6) staff. This position will develop a long-term strategy for staffing and professional development of the unit. The Associate Director of Athletics for Strategic Communications will closely collaborate with the Deputy Athletic Director for Finance and External Operations/CFO, the Assistant Director of Athletics for Marketing & Ticketing, Multimedia Manager, Social Media Specialist, Learfield, the Brown University Sports Foundation and other units to ensure consistency and cohesion in messaging and communication. This position will also coordinate with Brown’s Office of University Communications as necessary to support the overall reputational goals of the University.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, integrated marketing or related field, with 7-10 years of professional experience, preferably in public relations, public affairs, media, broadcast communications or a related field.
Previous budgetary and full-time staff oversight experience.
Extensive experience in public relations and previous experience in a public higher education institution is preferred. Experience with collegiate athletics highly desired.
Exceptional verbal communication, writing and editing skills with incredible attention to detail.
Excellent oral, presentation and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated expertise in developing communication/marketing strategies.
Thorough understanding of marketing permissions, copyright and all aspects of intellectual property management for marketing.
Must be able to maintain strong relationships with top tier national media
A proven track record of media/social media success.
Must have experience managing complicated assignments with multiple contributors, editors and stakeholders.
Ability to work under pressure within tight deadlines while managing multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
Must possess outstanding interpersonal skills; ability to build and maintain effective working relationships, with the energy and dynamism to inspire others and effectively engage internal and external constituents.
Must be a proven strategist.
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Applications
Demonstrated organizational, analytical, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
Ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment
