About Sporting City West
About Our Club
Sporting Kansas City was unveiled as one of the 10 charter members of Major League Soccer on June 6, 1995. Known as the Kansas City Wiz during the inaugural 1996 season and the Kansas City Wizards from 1997-2010, the club reached an early peak at the turn of the century when it won the 2000 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield title. On Aug. 31, 2006, a team of Kansas City entrepreneurs ushered in a new era by purchasing the club from founder Lamar Hunt and the Hunt Sports Group. Under the guidance of the new Sporting Club ownership group—comprised of Neal Patterson and Cliff Illig, two of the founders of healthcare software pioneer company Cerner Corporation, along with Pat Curran, Greg Maday and Robb Heineman—Kansas City’s professional soccer club rebranded from the Wizards to Sporting Kansas City in 2010 and moved into world-class Children’s Mercy Park the following year, setting the stage for a transformational decade of excellence.
In addition to winning two MLS Cups (2000, 2013) and four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups (2004, 2012, 2015, 2017), Sporting Kansas City has opened world-class facilities such as Swope Soccer Village, Children's Mercy Park, Wyandotte Sporti...ng Fields and Pinnacle while investing in the Sporting KC Academy and Sporting Kansas City II for developing local youth into homegrown talent.
At Sporting Kansas City, we continually strive to win championships, deliver a world-class product on and off the field, create the finest fan experience in sports, create meaningful connections with the community and innovate in all that we do.
Sporting Kansas City is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all associates.
