Wheaton College seeks a new Director of Athletics and Recreation. This inspirational and motivational leader provides vision, direction, and senior leadership for all varsity, club, and recreational programs at the College. The athletic program is an integral part of the holistic, living-learning experience at Wheaton College. Possessing a commitment to competing at the highest level in the conference, region and NCAA to help create a positive environment in which student-athletes are expected to excel in the classroom and within their respective teams is critical to this role. The director will lead the strategic plan implementation efforts, support the academic and physical well-being of varsity athletes as well as club and recreational sport participants, and oversee the marketing and communications functions of the department.
The Director will engage in major fundraising efforts and alumni engagement initiatives and will lead athletic facility renovation and new development fundraising goals which will assist with and invest in the sustained growth and future of the programs. Essential Functions include:
Develop and clearly articulate the vision for the athletics department through dynamic and ethical leadership. Create a presence through leadership and a department culture which strives to excel competitively and enhance the experience of student athletes daily.
Hire, supervise and evaluate department personnel. Directly manage administrative, coaching, and athletic training staff. Create a culture of teamwork, inclusive excellence and success within the department.
Provide careful administration and oversight of the department’s operating and revenue budgets to ensure the effectiveness, efficiency, and fiscal responsibility of the College’s financial resources.
Maintain current and expert understanding of NCAA and conference regulations, legislation, and processes. Provide leadership and accountability to ensure that the varsity athletic program complies with all local, state, and federal laws, including Title IX, and one that adheres to all college policies and procedures.
Demonstrate a clear commitment to advancing gender equity, diversity, and inclusion in athletics programs, participants, and personnel. Possesses the philosophy of an integrated athletics and recreation department with other aspects of campus life contributing to a seamless, holistic student experience.
Develop and implement a comprehensive advancement plan for the Athletic Department inclusive of constituent engagement, communications, solicitations, and stewardship. In collaboration with the Vice President for Advancement and the Vice President for Student Affairs, establish and achieve annual fundraising performance goals to support major athletic capital projects and other departmental funding priorities. Cultivate and manage a portfolio of prospects that are capable of making major gifts towards athletics.
In coordination with the Office of Admission, create an environment within the athletic department which facilitates the successful recruitment of academically successful students and maintains a supportive environment conducive to academic progress and successful student outcomes for varsity athletes.
Champions the physical health, safety, performance, and well-being of varsity athletes by maintaining a high quality sports medicine, strength, and conditioning program.
Serves as a member of the Division of Student Affairs senior leadership team and performs other duties as required or assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years progressive program management and leadership experience in an athletics environment at the collegiate level. A demonstrated in-depth understanding of Division III athletics environment is required.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree plus 5 years experience in higher education leadership, business management, sports management or other related field.
Leadership experience in a Division III athletics environment and experience in a head coaching role at the collegiate level is highly preferred.
Experience in a small, private, residential, liberal arts environment also preferred.
Willingness to engage beyond athletics and recreation in a vibrant, collaborative community environment.
