The Assistant Director for Athletics and Ice Hockey Operations will join an exceptional staff who strive to create an unrivaled experience that fosters the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth of our student-athletes in order to prepare them for success as leaders in the global community. Reporting to the Sr. Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, the Assistant Director for Athletics and Ice Hockey Operations supports operations for all 22 intercollegiate NCAA Division III sports and 2 Division I sports (men’s and women’s ice hockey).
This mission critical role will manage and coordinate athletic facilities, three equipment centers, team equipment operations, facility improvements, game day event management/supervision, Men’s and Women’s NCAA Division I Ice Hockey operations, supervision of student employees and hockey operations coordinators, procurement of hockey and athletic facility equipment, student athlete housing and meal coordination during University break periods and act as GPC liaison for both hockey programs.
The responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Oversee operations for multiple athletic equipment facilities and varsity team areas by integrating current and long range processes to ensure the efficient maintenance and operation of athletic equipment facilities. Administer risk assessments for all athletic equipment operations centers and provide processes to maintain compliance. Prepare and manage medical safety data reports to satisfy OSHA requirements. In conjunction with team head coaches, identify, purchase and maintain various athletic equipment for team use (practice and competition). Develop and implement management processes for selected FMS projects and FMS staff for daily and special event needs.
- Provide supervision of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey operations. Directly supervise Hockey Operations Coordinators for each program and determine salary/hours of each employee. Survey head coaches and hockey operation coordinators for special needs for travel. Negotiate and determine team travel budgets and contracts (hotels, bus transportation, team meals) with vendors. Establish and coordinate bidding process for team equipment purchases to satisfy NCAA safety standards. Responsible for mediating issues that arise for both programs in all aspects of their operations.
- Provide autonomous administrative supervision over selected events while managing all aspects of selected game competitions. Establish processes for management of each sport competition and develop an emergency protocol to ensure the safety of all attendees and participants. Create new solutions processes for event management issues that arise during the course of a year. Primary responsibilities during an event include the supervision of student and professional staff that support the operations of each event including event set up/tear down, referee liaison, ticketing, parking, VIP’s, FMS needs and crowd control support in conjunction with Public Safety.
- Represent and negotiate as a senior administrator of the athletic department with university arenas staff for all of our hockey team’s needs. Work with UA administrative staff to make final decisions that will be in the best interest of the hockey programs in regards to game and practice scheduling, facility operations, and game day operations/staffing.
- Act as hiring manager and supervisor for all student workers supporting the three athletic equipment operations centers. Develop equipment center services budget and create management processes to provide yearlong quality customer service to all of our teams. Sole responsibility for management of equipment centers, including sanitary support through external vendors. Develop preventative maintenance processes that ensure properly functioning operations in case of an emergency or malfunctioning equipment.
- Provide budget oversight for teams involved in fall Pre-Season/Winter Break/Post Commencement extended stay. Determine and implement protocol for room and board for those student athletes who are representing RIT in regular and post season play. Negotiate and determine contract terms/pricing with local vendors and on campus departments to support the student athletes.
- Participate on committees and professional development as appropriate.
- Other duties assigned by Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in a related field
A 2-3 years’ professional experience in intercollegiate athletics organization.
Ability to foster relations with internal staff and student-athletes
Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately
Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural groups
Computer proficiency using software and enterprise systems appropriate for the complexities of the role and its functions
Experience supervising student and professional staff
