The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications works under the supervision of the Director of Athletic Communications and the Associate Director of Athletic Communications assisting in publicizing the varsity teams, general programs, and events of the two athletic departments of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Duties include generating and distributing news articles and contributing to the maintenance of HWSAthletics.com, social media interactions, creating video, and tracking statistics. The individual is also responsible for developing external media relationships and managing media requests for assigned sports.
Aggregating information and generating stories based on team competitive success, student-athletes, coaches and other related topics to inform and engage fans, particularly with time-sensitive information. Stories may take the form of articles, video, social media posts and other innovative media. Recording in-game statistics using Stat Crew/Genius Sports and maintaining historical records. Writing releases for broad distribution over multiple platforms. Filing required reports with the appropriate conference and national office. Nominating student-athletes and coaches for weekly and end-of-season awards for assigned teams. Producing game day programs and media game notes. Game day responsibilities include managing media requests, setting up equipment for webcasts, conducting postgame interviews with coaches and/or student-athletes, engaging fans on social media and writing stories. Developing strong, professional relationships with coaching staff to better support their recruiting efforts.
This is a 10-month, full-time, benefits-eligible, administrative hourly (40 hours per week) position. Frequent evening and weekend work required. Additional hours will be required on occasion.

Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a related field (journalism, communications, sports management, etc.). Candidates need strong written and oral communication skills as well as proficiency with Photoshop and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube). Ideal but not required: proficiency in desktop publishing (InDesign), website management, and basic computer applications along with experience with in-game statistical software (StatCrew). Experience shooting broadcast-caliber interviews and game footage, and with live streaming technology, will be a significant plus. Additional preference will be given to candidates with experience statting volleyball.
