Assist the Director of Athletics in the overall management, supervision, and leadership of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Serves as a member of the Director of Athletics senior staff and serve as primary authority in the Director’s absence. Manage day-to-day departmental operations. Monitor student-athlete welfare. Assist with long range/strategic planning. Serve as primary contact for scheduling of facilities as well as event supervisor for all post-season events. Supervise assigned sports. Attend assigned institutional, Horizon League, and NCAA meetings as necessary. Work in conjunction with Assistant/Associate Athletics Director (AD) for Compliance and Assistant AD for Fiscal Affairs to manage departmental scholarship budget. Work with Senior Associate AD for External Affairs to identify and cultivate potential donors. Provide oversight and planning for programs that benefit student-athletes as well as continuing education programs for coaches and staff.
Level of Decision Making: The incumbent serves as second in command for the department and has the authority to make decisions in the Director’s absence. These could be in any number of situations. A bad decision could result in NCAA sanctions, forfeiture of games and possibly put student-athletes and staff at risk.
Scope and Impact: The incumbent works to formulate policy that affects the entire department. This impacts all the departments were have interaction with including financial aid, the bursar, IU Foundation and academic units. The incumbent will chair many of the committees that impact the work of the athletics department.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise assigned sports and staff related to student-athlete welfare, e.g. strength and conditioning, athletic training, team physician and nutrition. This includes evaluation of coaches and general well-being of the program. Provide daily guidance to sport programs and coaches regarding team management, administration, operations, compliance, and other related matters. Serve as the primary liaison for assigned sport program(s) and coaches to all athletic department units and other internal and external stakeholders in order to facilitate business for the coaching staff, team, and student-athletes. Responsible for the overall administration of the assigned sport programs, which includes, but is not limited to, budgetary, compliance, scheduling, problem-solving, and policy and procedure management.
Assist the Director of Athletics in the overall operation of the program. Serve as the Director in his absence. Represent IUPUI at institutional, Horizon League, and NCAA meetings as required. Work with Director of Athletics on long range/strategic planning initiatives, departmental policies/procedures development, budget preparation, planning, monitoring, and allocation of resources. Coordinate staff yearly performance reviews.
Work in conjunction with the Assistant/Associate Athletics Director for compliance to manage the departmental scholarship budget. Serve as one of the departmental liaisons to campus housing, financial aid, parking services, and bursar office.
Work with Senior Associate AD for External Affairs and Assistant AD for Development to identify and cultivate potential donors. Provide individualized and strategic stewardship for existing donors. Maintain a prospect portfolio of potential donors.
Monitor departmental gender equity and diversity efforts. Provide an annual report to the Director of Athletics. Manage departmental yearly and exit interviews for all student-athletes. Compile survey results and provide to the Director of Athletics and Faculty Athletics Representative. Supervise the Life Skills program to provide programming for student-athletes and continuing education programming for coaches and staff.
Oversee the scheduling of facilities and game operations. Supervise the Director of Facilities and Operations. Obtain schedules for practice and competition for all sports and work to ensure maximization of available time within campus and off-site facilities. Serve as supervisor for hosting home post-season events. Ensure compliance with institutional, Horizon League, and NCAA host requirements.

REQUIRED: Juris Doctor or Master’s Degree plus 3 years of athletics administration experience.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge of NCAA rules. Ability to work in a complex fast-paced environment.
